Who am I?

Who am I? That’s a good question, and sometimes I’m the worst person at answering it.

…but here goes.

First of all, I come from a town called Barnsley, Yorkshire.

Barnsley is still known as a coal mining history- although it had more or less vanished by the time I remember anything. So I was born in the 1980s, and came of age within the optimistic haze of the 1990s, where the warm glow of Mediterranean-based advertisements seemed to promise a coming millennium of self-actualisation and happiness for all.

Since the early 2000s I’ve been making work. I have gone from a semi-art-illiterate artist making work about climate change, to becoming known for making large-scale drawings about, predominantly the psychic distress of late-stage capitalism, to arriving back at myself: taking a good hard look at my own actions, and inactions through the fictionalised millennial emotional odyssey ‘Wall, i’.

My practice is thus a bit like chewed food – all specialities are unidentified. The one defining feature is its pathos, its intent. For this reason I like making big projects, that perpetually orchestrate attempts to overcome many of the distressing and alienating aspects of being a Modern human…but, this doesn’t mean when I’m working idea it isn’t the most exciting feeling. Many of these projects have been collaborative, including many with the artist-led collective ‘the Retro Bar at the End of the Universe’
